Pierre de Bien Sçavoire is said to have come to Gower in around 1280 to serve William de Breos, Lord of Gower. Through his wife, Constance, daughter of Thomas (Tomos?) ap Gruffydd Gŵyr, he acquired the lordship of Llan-y-tair-Mair. His son was known in English as Adam Knowel, and is said to have called his lordship after himself - Knowelston, from which comes the modern name, Knelston.
