The founder of the Bennet family in Gower is said to be Sir Gervase Benet de Penclawdd, who was a contemporary of William the Conquerer. Centuries later, in 1534, William Benet leased Penrice Castle on the Gower Peninsula from the Mansel family, and the Bennets lived there and farmed the land until 1669. The castle itself deteriorated over this time and a new farmhouse beneath the castle became their primary residence.
As well as Penrice, branches of the Bennet family have resided at Laleston near Bridgend and Cilfein in Monmouthshire.
